Morning Time

Jesus has risen from the dead

Mark 1 Early Morning

I love being up early and sitting with a cup of coffee. It is here, in my chair it is just the Lord and I.  Jesus has set the example for me and you too.

Listen to Mark as he writes what a day in the lift of Jesus was like. After a whirlwind week of healing, driving out demons and calling his first four disciples, he was weary. He slept and then awoke early in the morning while it was still dark.  He left Peter’s house and went into the quiet of the wilderness to pray. What do you do early in the morning while it is still dark?

As the sun rose Peter and the others went looking for Jesus and found him in the mode of prayer. What do others find us doing? Today is Easter and we praise God for the risen Savior. Jesus woke early to spend time in prayer and He sets the example for us. Does God find us rejoicing in prayer for the risen Savior?

Forgiving as Christ did

Bitterness divides/forgiveness unites

Philemon 1 Today we send notes and letters via email but rarely snail mail. Imagine being in the time of Paul when a letter was handwritten and then hand carried across the many miles to a dear friend. Even though Paul is in a Roman prison as he writes, his first note is that he is prisoner of Christ. A prisoner is one who is beholden to another out of force, not willingly. In this dark, dank place, Paul was refreshed by the runaway slave, Onesimus from Colosse. How he got there and what he was doing there is a question for eternity, but God used that time to introduce him to Christ. Now Paul, probably after many a discussion, has sent Onesimus back to Philemon with this letter.

What can we learn from this letter? One is that Paul, even though having never met Philemon considers him a dear friend. Prov 17:9 says that the one who forgives an offense seeks love and that is what Paul is saying to Philemon. Yes, Onesimus has done wrong but now Paul says that as a new creation in Christ, I am imploring you to forgive him and include him as a brother in Christ.

How quick we are to hang on to offenses rather than forgiving? This Sunday is Easter and it is the plainest example of forgiveness . Christ on the cross said: Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.

Do you have a grudge or an offense you are carrying? Pray as Jesus prayed.

“How Blessed We Are!”

Ps 32-33 If there is a psalm that touches the heart of every believer it is Psalm 32 with its words:

“How blessed is the one whose rebellious acts are forgiven, whose sin is pardoned! How blessed is the one whose wrongdoing the Lord does not punish, in whose spirit there is no deceit.” [NET]

“How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered! How blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit!” [ISV]

As we read this we are reminded of Psalm 1 with a similar refrain: “How blessed is the man” Over and over throughout scripture we read of the blessings. In Psalm 32 it refers to “happiness that God-given security and prosperity produce.”

When we look within ourselves we see nothing but the depravity of our hearts but when God looks he sees transgressions or the sin for which his son has paid the price of our redemption. How can one be ungrateful when one reads these words? How can one stand with fist upraised to a holy God who sees beyond who we are to who we are in His eyes? How can we not stand amazed at the blessings that have been poured out upon us? If we do nothing else but ponder and recite these words back to Our Precious Heavenly Father, our Precious Savior Redeemer Jesus, our Precious Illuminating Holy Spirit on our prayer walk it would be enough to carry us through today and on into tomorrow.

Beloved are you as humbled as I am when you read these words?

From Old to New

Titus 3 Paul, in writing to his protege, Titus,  began by telling him the kind of people to whom he is being sent. They are the “dregs” of society. They are liars and they live their lives undermining all good things. But, something has happened to these people. They have been changed through the power of the Holy Spirit and are now righteous before God. Because of that, they are to exhibit holy and righteous behavior, but they need to be reminded over and over not to slip back into their old ways. As believers now, we too need reminding because our arch enemy is there to tell us lies for he comes to seek, kill and destroy. It was because of God’s mercy that He saved us and now we are to walk in newness of life. It will be a constant battle, not of swords, but of thoughts, ideas and values of our old life. Just as Paul reminded Titus that these Cretans needed reminding, so we need to be reminded as well. Our new lives should be peaceable, gentle, showing complete courtesy to all people.

So how are we doing today as we live and move through our day?

More Instructions

Titus 2 The life of a minister of the gospel means he must be a teacher of all. Paul knew that because Titus was young, he needed wisdom for each group in his flock and so he spent much time explaining what he has learned from experience. Each group of his parishioners look to him for wise counsel for the church and the home. We see this even today for our churches are multi-generational. The pastor must live a holy life as an example and then teach with wisdom.

And lastly Paul tells Titus to not let anyone look down on him because of his youth. To do that, Titus must be a man of integrity and a man of prayer. This is wise counsel for even today we have many who are coming into the role of pastor and yet are young. Pray for your pastor!

The Women of the World

Proverbs 7 Adultery

Solomon continues his teaching of his son (s) about the ways of the woman of the world. If anyone could instruct us in this topic it is Solomon. It is like reading his diary and he shows us the pattern of how this sin evolves and destroys the unsuspecting.

Solomon gives us wise  instructions: “Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways—;” Notice it is the heart that is easily caught because it is deceitful and desperately wicked. [Jer 17:9] Sin begins in the heart and then follows its path to the loss of purity.

Secondly, do not wander into her pathways. There are two paths of life, one that is wide and leads to destruction and the other is narrow which leads to life everlasting. The adulterous woman walks on the wide path and seeks followers, so be alert and choose wisely.

And now for the reason: “For she has been the ruin of many; many men have been her victims.” [Prov 7:26 MSG.]

The lesson for us who are the aged is to read this and share its truths to the younger generation.

Praise God

Trust God

PSALM 30 No matter what life throws at us, one thing we must do is praise the Lord for he alone is orchestrator of our lives. King David in writing this psalm is reminding us all that both good and bad come from the hand of the Lord so that this truth may be known: “And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” [Rom 8:28]  God has a purpose beyond what we can see at the moment so it is befitting that we praise Him in the highs and the lows. That means we must trust His plan; even if we don’t see the purpose. When we choose praise and prayer more than lamenting then we are able to have a mindset that honors the Lord. Maybe that is why King David wrote: “Then you turned my lament into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and covered me with joy.” [Ps 30:11]

Today stop and praise the Lord for His plan and purposes are higher than the heavens and thus we can dance with joy.

Be ready! Be prepared!

2 Timothy 4 Trainer Mode

We have been trained to be prepared for any disaster that might come our way but do we follow those rules? Sometimes yes and sometimes no. Our emotions often take over and we forget what we have learned. Paul is in his teachable moment with Timothy who will be leading the church in his absence. He wisely prepares Timothy for his role that he might be used of God for the kingdom’s purpose. Like Paul, Timothy is charged to equip the church in four distinct ways.

First there is no rest for the weary. You must be available in every season of life. Problems do not come with a date and time of the month, but often surface when you least expect them. So you must be prepared as he told him, so that he is a workman who is proven wise.

Secondly, he has to have his tool belt on so he is ready to instruct the church in four areas. He is to teach them the all things about the gospel and the discipleship.  He is to reprove and correct anything that is wrong scripturally. He is to be in trainer mode 24/7.

Whether you in the leadership model or just a listener, heed these same steps so that God will be pleased to say: well done, thou good and faithful servant.

A Truth

2Tim 3 “Don’t be Left Behind”

The “Left Behind Series” grabbed many viewers and revealed much about the rapture and the end times. But, suppose you could write the headline for the last day’s newspaper that will only be read by those who are “left behind.” Would it say something like this: Where were you when everyone disappeared? This chapter describes in detail why they are “left behind.” They like the people in Noah’s day were ignorant and indifferent to the signs that Jesus and Paul revealed.

Open today’s newspapers and it is almost as if you are reading from Matthew 24 and 2Tim 3! But, with all of that before us, we are to be busy about the Master’s business so that when he does return we are faithfully serving wherever and whenever. And part of that serving is to teach the inspired Word of God which is why Paul ended this chapter with this profound verse:

“Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,…” [2 Tim 3:16]

Not only does Paul tell us that the very Word of God was God breathed but also has four distinct purposes: teaching or instructing; reproving or revealing where one has erred; correction or bringing one back to the foundational principles; and lastly training in righteousness—that is ordering the training steps that will achieve that purpose.

Why did God prepare the scriptures and pass them on century after century? He tells us the reason: that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good work.

Don’t be caught unawares and left behind. Instead drink in the God breathed Word so that you are prepared and ready to meet the Master. Know the scriptures and use them to equip yourself for His work.

Don’t be a hornet

2 Timothy We have heard the phrase “don’t disturb a hornet’s nest” and I can attest that to be true. When I was a teenager helping my dad clean out the tobacco barn I inadvertently disturbed one and the result was massive insect bites for hornet’s unlike bees, can sting and sting again. So that phrase is true, not just in the insect world but also in the affairs of men. Paul encourages Timothy to not be engaged in controversial issues for they just raise the anger and the endless back and forth with no resolution. “But reject foolish and ignorant controversies because you know they breed infighting. “ [2 Tim 2:23] How true that is today as we seek to be discerning regarding the men who seek to fulfill the office of president.

Instead, Paul encourages us to be faithful using the examples of a soldier, an athlete and a farmer. All of these are rewarded with advancement and blessings when they are obedient and faithful by remaining steadfast. Which example would you choose to follow?  That holds true not just in the world of occupations but also in the Lord’s army. May we study to be approved, a workman who is unashamed before our Lord.

Don’t be a hornet but choose to be a faithful steward of God’s Word.
