Exodus 29 Offerings

God gifts men/women to do the work of the ministry

As believing Christians we take it as a rule to offer our tithes to the Lord to honor Him. We have set apart the first day of the week to do this in our worship time. God established this so that the people would always remember that all they have been given was from God. In the time we are reading in the book of Exodus God gave instructions to the Israelites to do this not just one day a week but as Dr.Durham noted: “thus the day was opened and closed with gifts to Yahweh, from whom all gifts were believed to come.”

This is an interesting viewpoint and rules given for the same reason as the Israelites. Offerings are given and as such are part and parcel of our belief system so that we always have before us a reminder of God’s graciousness to us.

Are you like Scrooge or like God?

1Tim Scrooge or God2a

Advent Series: 1Tim 6 BecCareful you are not a Scrooge; Instead be generous like God

Many the world over are familiar with Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol” with the main character of Scrooge who thinks only about gathering and keeping money. Three ghosts appear to show him his faulty logic. Paul’s counsel to Timothy is much like the wisdom of the ghost of Christmas present, Christmas past and Christmas future and the lesson of Scrooge is straight from the words in 1Timothy 6 that we all need to learn:

For we have brought nothing into this world and so we cannot take a single thing out either. But if we have food and shelter, be satisfied with that. Those who long to be rich, however, stumble into temptation and a trap. For the love of money is the root of all evils. Some people in reaching for it have strayed from the faith and stabbed themselves with many pains.

Just like Scrooge, we too must be wary of gaining and storing up riches for self. Jesus taught that same principle; no one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. Again he taught a parable about a rich landowner who boasted that he could eat, drink, and celebrate because he chose to store his riches in many barns. God called him a fool and said that that very night his life would come to an end.

Jesus asked: then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’

In this Christmas season may we learn from Jesus:

To whom much is given much is required.

What gift will you share from your abundance this season?

Where is God on Your Priority List?

Haggai priorities2a

Haggai 1 & 2 Fifty-six years ago I read a verse in Malachi and claimed it for our family. With little faith, I wondered if God would, could, should do it. Let me share a testimony: I may have claimed it but God proved faithful. The result? It made me a strong believer in His promises as I watched a simple claim to become a treasure in faith. Haggai wants the people to do the same so listen carefully to his words:

The people were saying as many do today: I have bills to pay; I don’t have enough to tithe or whatever is leftover I may give to  God’s work.  But, God was clear then and He is clear today:  your thinking is backward!  Therefore He records two promises; one in Malachi and one in Matthew!

“Bring the entire tithe into the storehouse; Test me and see if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing for you until there is no room for it all.” [Mal 3 thought]

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” [Matt 6]

The point being: when we put God first, He blesses and as the Israelites were experiencing; the reverse is also true. Is it any wonder then that Haggai came to the people and rebuked them for wrong priorities?  Was it right for them to live luxuriously while the house of the Lord lay in ruins? Then three times he asked them to reconsider their priorities. The result? Haggai’s message was convicting! The people turned and put God first and then God did just as Malachi said. Their crops rebounded and their pocketbooks were replenished.

God is clear: if I am first, I will be with you and I will bless you.

Is church and giving to the work of the Lord on the bottom of your list? Where is God in your priority list?
