The Parable of the Sower

Mark 4 It is spring here in Texas and each day we see that the seasonal grasses and flowers are emerging from their winter sleep. Each day we see the changes that come with more light and warmth. As Jesus sat in the boat near shore, He taught the people using the picture of the hillside and a farmer who had tilled the soil and now was scattering seeds in hope of a new crop in the days ahead.

Each farmer knows that the enemies of the seeds are waiting. There are the crows who watch and with a keen eye sees that some of the farmer’s seeds have fallen on the hard path around his garden. They swoop in and grab those and feed upon them. But, some seeds have made it into the garden soil only to be thwarted by the enemies of weeds who choke out the new growth. It is only the seeds that fall into the furrow and are graciously hidden until roots form and push forward to capture the light and the warmth of the sun that will produce a crop that is worthy.

Jesus often used images of those things with which the people saw day after day and understood the growth pattern of vegetation. As they listened, they also watched above them the farmer doing his work. Like the disciples, the people watched, but did not equate the pattern. Jesus lovingly explained it to his disciples, and just like us, we then have the “aha” moment! This is not about seeds and plants, but the seeds of the gospel message to the unbelieving. The enemy is Satan who comes to seek, kill and destroy. But, God is greater than Satan and His Word will not be voided.

Which seed are you today? Only Jesus can protect you in the furrow of His garden. Your life can be hidden from the enemy if you are willing to let Him till your soil.

Meeting the Needs of others

Mark 2 The Sabbath

God established the Sabbath as a day of rest, but that did not mean that the people were to ignore the needs of others on that day. If these religious leaders really believed that truth, then why did they seek to trap Jesus into healing? Why are their hearts so hard? Why have they not treated this man with the withered hand with kindness? Truly, Jesus asked them is it good to let this man continue on in his suffering when you have the opportunity to help? But, Mark records that they were silent when asked. They were more concerned about their place in society than their place with God.

Today seek to do good to those who are suffering. Job’s friends came and sat with him for 7 days silently. These Pharisees came and sat in the synagogue silently. The friends of Job had hearts of kindness, but these Pharisees had hearts of stone. The contrast is clear: when the need arises, touch the hearts of those who are needy.

Faithful Friends

Mark 2 In chapter 1 Jesus leaves Galilee and begins his preaching career with his new disciples who have obeyed and followed Him. When Jesus calls, we must surrender and follow. They had moved from town to town quickly and after some time, they returned to Capernaum where Jesus had healed Peter’s mother in law and He had spent the night in prayer. Even though there were no town criers or newspapers or text messages, the people became aware that this man, Jesus, had returned. Many had heard, perhaps, of how he had healed and taught and so they came wondering if he would do the same here. Amongst this crowd four precious friends brought a paralyzed friend in hopes of his healing.

The friends were persistent and left no stone unturned for when they could not enter the house, they went up on the rooftop and removed the covering to lower him to see Jesus. Unlike the religious leaders sitting listening, these friends came for the healing touch of Jesus and were not disappointed. Did they realize that Jesus would point out their sins? Probably not. They came for physical healing but went away with both physical and spiritual healing. Jesus sees the heart as well as the physical need.

Where do you have a need that only Jesus can supply? Will you be as persistent as these four friends to bring someone to Jesus?
