Proverbs 23 What price?

Probably one of our weakest areas in this life is this tool of discernment. You may be born with it, but truly it is a skill that you must be taught and honed. To discern is to stop and think what is true in contrast to what is false. The Proverbs chapters speak of this over and over, so it must be a skill that is needed to succeed and one that will protect us from falling for the ways of the world and our arch enemy Satan.

Discernment is what you can use in nearly every engagement be it, purchasing a garment or even  as this Proverb says to paid dinners with high ranking people. Not always, but many times, the dinner is really a cover up for what they want you to do after the dinner. For example, you are invited to a swanky hotel and a posh dinner but behind that dinner, usually after listening to a speech, you are asked to donate an amount whether it be for a starving child or a man/woman who wants our vote.

The Proverbs author tells us “do not crave that ruler’s delicacies, for that food is deceptive.” In other words, that meal you are enjoying comes with a price. Warning signal: “Eat and drink,” he says to you, but his heart is not with you;” In fact the Proverbs author goes so far as to say: “will have wasted your pleasant words.”

Word to the wise, stop and consider what the payment will be if you attend these functions.

God Protects

Psalm 98 God protects His faithful followers

Do you have a busy day ahead? Do you face timelines and people with tempers flaring? Does the news set you on edge? The psalm 98 is a perfect psalm for you to start the day.

You who love the Lord, hate evil!He protects the lives of his faithful followers; he delivers them from the power of the wicked.

Over and over through the centuries we see the proof of these words. Yes, there are times when God allows evil to triumph, but it is short lived and the evil doers do meet their doom. The story of Esther is proof that God protects His own and takes down the Haman’s of this world.

Further the psalmist wrote: You godly ones, rejoice in the Lord. Give thanks to his holy name.

What a wonderful psalm to start the day as we move from place to place in traffic.

Where is your confidence?

Ps 54 If anyone could write a novel of real life as a 007 agent, it is King David. His experience of hairbreadth escapes reads like a James Bond novel. James Bond fan, often escapes with finesse and smart tactics, thanks to cinematography. But, David lived it in real life, and today’s psalm finds him seeking a respite as he had done previously near the camp of the Ziphites, who were, in fact, blood relatives. However, they are the Judas Iscariot’s of the OT as they betray and double-cross, revealing to Saul where David is hidden.

This is the backdrop and prominent theme in Psalm 54. David voiced his prayer to Elohim and asked him for deliverance and for God to deliver him.

There is a principle here: God hears and responds to those whose heart is perfectly aligned with him. Elohim is the only one who has the power to deliver when we are in dire circumstances. Surely, he (Adonai = Lord- master) rescues us from all our troubles.

Beloved, remember our “struggle [is] not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens.” But, like Joseph and David, our God reigns, and He alone can deliver. David had confidence in the God he knew.

Where is your confidence this day?

Our Invisible Shield

psalm 31 8 invislbe shield2aTeaching 6th graders has been so exhilarating! Each week we get to know these kids better and better and it is exciting to see how much they retain. But the grandest gift of all is when they leave saying ‘I can’t wait to hear what happens next.” Smile, Smile, Smile on these teacher’s faces! Last week as we walked through Acts 22-23 with Paul we really saw the truth of an invisible shield about him when the whole world was in an uproar just because he said he was going to take the gospel to the Gentiles! Yet, God in His way protected Paul step by step because as He said: “you are going to  Rome to testify of me.”

Have you ever experienced God’s invisible shield? David did. In Psalm 31-33 we find one word repeated. Like an echo, we hear “protector.”  He certainly could look back over his life and see instances where God lovingly covered over him in and from danger. In Saul’s palace, God placed his invisible shield to protect David when Saul threw his spear at him. Or again as Saul entered the cave and David could have taken Saul’s life but God’s invisible shield protected him from committing sin.

Obviously, David, as the author, realizes he has been seeking shelter from King Saul. Only God could put His invisible shield about him to blind the eyes of Saul and give David peace in the midst of the storm.

We wonder how often David stood out in the open overlooking the hills of Judea, looking for Saul as his enemy to surface. In those times he shares “you do not deliver me from the power of the enemy, instead “you enable me to stand in a wide open place.” Although vulnerable, God had his invisible shield about him and he sensed that presence.

Stop here and think, where did you see or “feel” God’s invisible shield about you recently? Did you stop and say thank you God for protecting me? Did you or would you share your experience below?

Does God See?

prov 5 stand before GodaAs a wise parent, Solomon continues to admonish or to gently reprove his children. Why? Because “Folly is bound up in the heart of a child.”[Prov 22] If we truly love our children, then we will spend our lives teaching life principles  using the inspired, God breathed scripture which is useful for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness. It cannot be done once but over and over, precept upon precept, line upon line. [Is 28].

Solomon zeroes in on the two commandments that are easily broken when one’s eyes are led astray: “thou shalt not commit adultery and thou shalt not covet.”  Once again he begins “be attentive, pay close attention” for we are easily distracted and foolishly think we are master of our own souls. He who would be wise would heed and run from the whispers of the evil one: “The Lord does not see this.” [Ps 94]  But, God does see: “the ways of a person are in front of the Lord’s eyes” [Prov 5:22]  And not only does he see but he records the names of those who respect the Lord and distinguishes between the one who chooses to serve God and the one who does not. [Mal4] “He, the Lord, weighs all that person’s path.” [Prov 5 21]

In order to be protected from the lies of the evil one, we must “hunger and thirst for righteousness.” In this way, we may discern what is true or false and be assured of keeping the Commandments.
