Satan at work

Acts 6: Have you ever been deceived? How clever is our arch enemy. He doesn’t seek to deceive the unrighteous for they are already his servants, but he seeks to deceive the righteous. Jesus rightly called Satan the deceiver and in this chapter we see him at work. He always works in secret as we saw in the lives of Ananias and Sapphira in Chapter 5 and we saw it in the trial of Jesus before the religious leaders. It is his secret tool and we must be aware of his work lest we are taken in to his kingdom’s work. Note vs 11 “they secretly instigated” some men.

Why does Satan use this tool? It is because of what John wrote in John 3 “people loved the darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil.’ [Jo 3:19] And what is the fruit of these secret works? “They incited the people as they did before Pilate. But, worse, they incited the elders and the scribes of the law who should have had discernment and wisdom yet they languished in their darkness. Truly Jesus said to them: “you search the scripture thoroughly because you think in them you possess eternal life but these scriptures testify about Me.” [Jn 5:39]

Today be wise and discerning as you listen to words presented to you.

Don’t be hoodwinked or Fooled

Ezra 4-6, Ps 137 Liars can feign truth through words and actions; therefore, we must be discerning. Ezra notes that the enemies came saying let us join you. Let “us” build the temple with you because we “are like you,” We seek your God, etc. Note “your” God, not their God but “your God.” Today, we have the same but very subtle saying, our Bible is the same as yours, but we have the enlightened edition with the words of our prophet or our teacher. We worship God just as you do. Beloved reader, these are false believers. They seem to say the right words, but like then, their intentions and actions proved otherwise. These were enemies that came to light when they filed an accusation with the king filled with lies and half-truths.

Just as then, our archenemy, Satan, is called the accuser of the brethren, and his words prove this truth: a half-truth is not truth at all. Remember this truth: There is one God, and His name is Yahweh!

God will move heaven and earth to shatter the lies of our archenemy. God is the God of truth, and His way is the right way. God will reveal His truth, and it will be the same as His word, for His Word is truth.

Pigs and Pearls, Fish and Snakes

Sitting on the hillside Jesus continues to masterfully teach his disciples and other listeners that they might be prepared for the work of the kingdom. Solomon gave principles but not necessarily the “why” nor an illustration but Jesus moves to the higher level by giving a principle, followed by its biblical truth and lastly illustrates it from life. We would be wise to heed and to do much like James reminds us in his letter: “be sure you live out the message and do not merely listen to it and so deceive yourselves.” Living out is the demonstrative action to prove to not only others but to ourselves of the truth that lies within us.

Pigs and Pearls: Do not judge as God would for eternal judgment belongs to him alone. However, we are to be discerning regarding truth and error. [see Heb 5] Jesus uses the illustration to reveal the crux of the matter: As we share the holy Word of God is it falling upon hearts that are tender (they get the pearls, the truths of God) or hearts that mock (these are the pigs who grovel in the garbage)?

Fish and Snakes: To illustrate the principle of prayer and gifts, Jesus uses the illustration of Fish and Snakes, earthly parents vs the Heavenly Father. If we want wisdom and answers to our questions, then we must like James says “ask God, who gives to all generously and without reprimand, and it will be given to him.” But, there is a catch: one must ask without doubting for he that doubts is just like the waves of the sea ebbing and flowing back and forth.

In a nutshell this chapter teaches us that we are to be wise [as serpents, harmless as doves] yet we are to take heed, consider before judging another but instead err on the side of mercy, “if a person is discovered in some sin, [pray for them] and seek restoration in a spirit of gentleness:”[Gal 6], seek wisdom and discernment from God, treat others the way you would want to be treated.

Know Thy Enemy

ImageLuke 22 “Satan vs The Servant” Or “Know Thy Enemy”

Dr. Luke has shown us from chapter 1 to now the contrast of the one who came to “seek and save the lost” with the one who seeks to destroy the king and the kingdom. We know from 2Cor that often he disguises himself as an angel of light and that he continues to walk about this earth seeking whom he may devour. In sharp contrast to him is The Servant who came lowly and meek lying in a manger to now where he will suffer at the cross for you and me. Observe if you will, how Satan works; not openly but behind the scenes seeking to disarm and destroy in the quiet, the unassuming, the orderly, the times of sacredness. This is where he seeks to do his work. This is his work for he is the author of the “deadly d’s” by which he seeks to disarm and destroy and in this chapter we find 6 of his ways:

Deception: The religious leaders were seeking a way to execute Jesus and thereby will break the sixth commandment “thou shalt not murder” because they think they are offering service to God.

Disillusionment: Satan infiltrates the disillusioned traitor, Judas, who has so mastered the cloak of traitor that no one suspects. But Jesus knows and reveals his ways and his work.

Defensiveness: The disciples “began to question one another as to which of them it could possibly be who would do this.”

Disputing: The disciples began to dispute “which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.”

Distraction: While all of this is going on it seems that Peter’s attention has drifted and The Servant calls him back:  “Simon, Simon, pay attention!” As Peter’s attention is arrested, he hears the ominous warning: “Satan has demanded to have you all, to sift you like wheat.” And how does Peter handle this?

Self-defense: But Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!” And it is in that moment that The Servant predicts what will happen: “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know me.”

Satan has infiltrated and sought to disrupt the most sacred of times. The Servant will disarm him not by force but by a reminder that these precious disciples are his and his alone: “You are the ones who have remained with me in my trials.”

Beloved, beware that it is when we are in the sacred moments such as reading, meditating, praying, busy about the Master’s business, that Satan will seek to do his work. It is then that we need to call upon The Servant to disarm him. We must “hold firmly to the faith” and “rekindle God’s gift that we possess”-learning to be discerning by words of the sacred scripture [Ps 119:11; 2Tim 2:15, Heb 5:14]. Call upon the power of the Holy Spirit which resides within you. Jer 29:12 When you call out to me and come to me in prayer, I will hear your prayers.
