12.14.24. Today and Tomorrow

Revelation 10 Just another day…

How is your walk today?
Is Jesus walking with you today?

We have watched the Apostle John as he has experienced the heavens opened and the crowd of believers and martyrs, but now John has an experience that only he and the angelic forces know about for he was told to seal the contents.

The newspapers of today write about what has happened and forecasts what they presume will happen tomorrow and beyond. As our biblical editor, John has now viewed something out of the ordinary and it is not ‘just another day” in paradise. It is frightening to behold the angel and hear the seven thunders and finally a voice saying seal this up, just as Daniel was told. We wonder if the scroll he was told to eat was the same scroll that others had seen and tasted.

The angel is majestic and mighty. He has a rainbow around his head and his legs are like fire. Imagine seeing this in real time. It isn’t “just another day.” It is a day that God wants us to see and to wonder about.

What has your day been like? Have you had a vision like John? Probably not, but we are to observe and ponder. Are we ready for the contents to be revealed or is it “just another day” to you?

Not my fault!

Proverbs 20 Responsibility

Like many today, the people of the time this was written, wanted not to take responsibility for their own sins. Dr. Constable explains it like this: “They were claiming to be the innocent victims of the actions of others, blaming others for their condition. In this they sounded just like many in our own day who refuse to take personal responsibility for their actions.” Today we call this blame-shifting. I am not at fault, it is someone else’s sin and I should not be held responsible. Kids do this today and it is almost like a switch was turned on: it’s not my fault. He made me do it. She made me do it.

Beware of this sin for it permeates society and your own group, whether it be family or the church. Paul wrote to the Romans: there is none righteous, no not one.” [Rom 3:10] The Proverbs author says it like this: Who can say, “I have kept my heart clean; I am pure from my sin”?“ [Proverbs 20:9]

Great question offered by Paul and to us.

My To-Do List for Today

Let your walk and talk match

Matt 5-7 Jesus had a to-do list, and it included teaching, preaching, and healing. His sermon on the mount gave the people clear principles of how to walk and talk in the world around them. He reminded the listeners that if they wanted to be blessed by God, they needed several character qualities because “God does not view things the way people do. People look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” [1Sam 16:7] Our work proves our faith, and that work includes how we relate to others or, as we say, our walk and talk should match. Later, Jesus’ half-brother James, said much the same. “So also faith, if it does not have works, is dead being by itself.” [James 2:17]

So the question is: Am I walking around with just a facade of holiness, or am I true to what I say I am? My faith should be seen in my walk and talk.

So what is on my to-do list for today? Is it to be poor in spirit? How about mourning over sin? Am I hungering and thirsting for righteousness? Am I being merciful to others who don’t deserve it, but God calls me to take that step?

This is some of my to-do list. What is included on your to-do list for today?

Today “is” but tomorrow is a question

vanishing smoke2aPsalm 146 “Today “is” but tomorrow is a question”

The psalmist extols his view of life and of God. He sees God as his protector, redeemer and steadfast unlike men who are untrustworthy and unreliable. As with many psalms he begins with praising God. “I will praise the Lord as long as I live” because whatever we may plan for today may not come to pass and tomorrow is even more questionable—so redeem the time you have been given. James captured this in a nutshell:

James 4: “Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will travel to such and such a city and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.” You don’t even know what tomorrow will bring—what your life will be! For you are like [a puff of smoke/vapour] that appears for a little while, then vanishes [is snatched out of sight]. Instead, you should say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”

Today as you go about your day, stop and give praise to God for every moment you have been given. Praise Him for all He has given and done for you. Use  today to praise God and see His plan for your day. Begin your day with asking what He would have you to do today because:

There is no guarantee of a tomorrow.

So Psa 105:4  Seek the Lord and the strength he gives!Seek his presence continually!

Living Life to the Fullest!

ImageThe second command is to “love your neighbor as yourself.” The author of Hebrews exhorts us to live that command before unbelievers and the world that they may see the Jesus Christ who is the same yesterday as He is today and will be forever! The world needs for you and I to show that truth in and through us.

First personally spread your joy to others in all situations that God brings to you each and every moment of the day. Remember that as you show brotherly love you might just be entertaining an angel sent from the Father. Abraham did such and received the blessing because he chose to show hospitality, willing to give without considering what he might receive in return. Throughout your walk, learn as Paul did to be content and then live that principle.

Secondly, pray and imitate the wise leaders that God has placed over you. Be discerning as to their needs even before they are spoken and meet them. That means we need to keep our eyes and ears open so that we can share out of our abundance. Pray diligently that they are pure and holy representatives for the kingdom.

The adventure has just begun, the past is behind us, the future lays before us. Are you ready to persevere? Are you ready to live out the first as well as the second command? Take the truth of the Book of Hebrews and spread it far and wide! Will you join me?
