How To Fight the Visible/Invisible War

be-vigilantaToday you can turn on a TV almost anywhere in the world and find so-called Christian programming.  I say so-called because there are many out there that are Christian in name only. As believers, we are not just facing an invisible war in our minds but also a visible war when we see and hear what may or may not be the truth. We must be discerning.

The Corinthians were being led astray by the “false apostles” who had infiltrated the church. Paul reveals that his flock, whom he loved, were not being discerning nor were they being Bereans to search the scriptures to see if these who had come into their midst were indeed Christ’s servants or not. These  had come with flattering words. They had come with a list of do’s and don’t’s adding works to a simple gospel salvation. They sought to exalt themselves not Christ. They looked like sheep but were wolves in sheep’s clothing. As Clarke said, “We mistake them for the working of the Holy Spirit.”

Be not deceived. If Satan could infiltrate the perfect Garden then he can and does infiltrate the church today. He comes either as a subtle serpent, a roaring lion or an angel of light.

How do we recognize them? They are the smooth talkers, the fancy dressers, the loud proclaimers; the false humility. They seek to place you under bondage. Jeremiah faced it as well: “They were supposed to watch over my people like shepherds watch over their sheep. But they are causing my people to be destroyed and scattered.” [Jer 23]

So what do we do? We become Bereans examining what they say. We observe and take notes on how they think and act. We pray and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We are cautious. We inspect their fruit. In short, we are careful or vigilant.

Psalm 115 “To God Be the Glory”

What do you worship?  A better question might be whom do you worship? As the Psalmist of old, we who are believers in Yahweh or God can say: “Not to us, O Lord, not to us,  But to Your name give glory” That is our purpose in this life and will extend to the afterlife when we stand before Lord God Almighty.  The psalmist then gives two reasons: He is loyal in his love to us and He is TRUTH. His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ said  “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” [John 14:6] And that is why the Lord God Almighty is superior to any idol man-made or otherwise.

The world may ask “where is your God?” The Apostle Peter attested to this fact when he said that in the last days scoffers will come asking: “Where is his promised return? For ever since our ancestors died, all things have continued as they were from the beginning of creation.”  We can answer that He is where He was yesterday and will be tomorrow   “our God is in the heavens.” It is in heaven that He who holds the universe in the palm of his hand sits undisturbed, his throne unshaken, and his purposes unchanged. “God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world his invisible attributes – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, because they are understood through what has been made.” [Romans 1]

Friend, do you know Him? He came for you that you might know him now and more importantly in eternity future. “Commit your future to the Lord! Trust in him, and he will act on your behalf.” [Psalm 37:5]

Feeling Pinched? God IS the Answer!

feeling-the-pinch2Did you ever lose something and no matter where you look or try to retrace your steps you cannot see the lost item. When that happens I take time to echo this prayer: Holy Spirit give me your eyes to see what is hidden. And you know what? It happens every time that He reveals that lost item which reminds me of the short pithy parable found in Luke 15 where a woman has lost one precious coin, lights a lamp and searches. When she finds it she says rejoice with me for I have found the lost coin. Now what does that have to do with Ps 18 and 2Sam 22 you ask?

David, the writer of these two sister passages says “in my distress I called to the Lord, I called to my God.” Like the woman of the lost coin, David was distressed. He was in a state of extreme necessity just like the woman. How often are we in a “pickle” and we seek to find the answer on our own. But, when we stop and seek the Illuminating Holy  Spirit’s power it is amazing how quickly the distress turns to rejoicing! Is it right to call upon the Lord for that help? Unequivocally YES!

We are often like the Israelites in the book of Judges who needed God’s help. He never stepped in until they cried out to him. There is a principle then: he who calls out or cries out to the Lord will be heard and God will respond. Vs 7b He heard my voice and listened to my cry for help.

Where are you seeking to solve a dilemma on your own? Try calling out to the Lord for His help. He is waiting, He is listening and He will answer.

“Bait and Switch”

We have all been approached by salesmen who say you have to take advantage of this deal today because tomorrow it will be gone. Beware, these are very persuasive people!  These were and are today the enemies we face. In Corinth there were those who sought to use these tactics to show Paul in the worst light possible. But God’s ways are not men’s. Truth will shine above the lies even though temporarily it may seem the other way around. As then it is true today, our true enemy is Satan and his goal is to dupe the unsuspecting, to deceive through any means possible. He targets those along the path of life who are seeking truth but often when the gospel is presented he comes and snatches it away lest they see the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ. Just as Paul, we too might be the target of the unscrupulous who seek to paint us in unflattering colors. This is not new for even the religious leaders tried this tactic with Christ. The truth of the matter is this: their temporal gain is their eternal loss.

So what do we do in situations like this? Take a lesson from Christ and Paul. Let your light shine through your earthen vessel for it is the light that dispels the darkness. If you are persecuted or knocked down remember this, Jesus will use this to present the gospel so that some will see and be converted while others will hear “you are without excuse.”

Precious One, do not despair, for your suffering is producing an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison. This is temporary but what cannot be seen is eternal.

Rise and Shine!

sunrise-ps-108aWhen do you spend time with God or do you even spend time alone with God? King David said, I will wake up at dawn. This was his willful, intentional decision. He made time to be alone with God in reading, prayer and praise. God was his priority no matter the kingdom or family issues before him. Is God your priority?

Ps 108 begins with this thought: my heart is fixed or steadfast, my heart is confident.

Here’s how “I” would use Psalm 108: Good Morning Lord! I woke up thinking about you and now here I am to learn from you. I am determined to accomplish this goal through your Illuminating Holy Spirit. I will sing, I will praise you with my whole heart. I will give you thanks for you are God. It is your faithfulness that I yearn to know more and more. So open my heart, eyes and ears to hear from you.  May your glory be seen all over the earth and let it start with me. I confess Lord that I need your deliverance this day from the ways of the enemy. Prepare me to see accomplishments in and over my life. It is by your power my enemies will be put to flight and it is because I trust in You and You alone.

Let your spirit roam through this psalm and pray it back to God. Why not make a date with God for your time alone with him  in the wee hours of the morning? Share how you would pray this psalm in your quiet time. Don’t wait, Start now! It’s time to Rise and Shine!
